The Town of New Market offers noteworthy 19th century buildings, family-friendly restaurants and shops, several hotels, the Shenvalee Golf Resort, and Endless Caverns located nearby. The New Market Heritage Days are celebrated annually.
The Battle of New Market is reenacted each year in May at the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park. The 280-acre battlefield museum offers a walking tour of the Confederate and Union lines and the origional farmhouse which was used as a hospital. The Battle of New Market was one of the most important small battles of the Civil War. The day-long battle, fought in a driving rainstorm, ended in a Confederate victory and saw the VMI Cadets in the thick of the fighting. Eight cadets died in the fighting, two more would die of wounds received in the battle.
A guided walking tour is available sponsored by the Appleblossom Inn. Stroll the timeworn streets of the Historic District with a historian/storyteller costumed in 1860’s period dress and hear the real life adventures of New Market’s nineteenth-century citizens. The information you hear is based on family and church histories, journals, diaries, and eyewitness accounts. You will see homes listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and hear folklore of the Shenandoah Valley.
The scenic Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive, Shenandoah Caverns/American Celebration on Parade, which features a collection of festival and parade floats and memorabilia is easily accessible from New Market.
